Only 36% Of Android Devices Running FroyoOnly 36% Of Android Devices Running Froyo
According to Google, 77% of all Android devices are running either Eclair or Froyo, but many are still stuck with Cupcake and Donut.
Google has updated its Android fragmentation report. The percentage of devices running Android 2.2 Froyo has climbed to 36.2% of all devices. The percentage of devices running Android 2.1 Eclair stands at 40.8%.
As far as Android 1.5 and 1.6 are concerned, the numbers are lower. Cupcake 1.5 holds a 7.9% presence and Donut 1.6 is on 15% of all Android devices. Together, that reveals that 23% of users are still stuck with an entirely too-old and out-dated version of Google's Android platform. (Sadly, some new phones are still launching with Android 1.6.)
These figures haven't shifted significantly in the last month, moving only several percentage points each. The Android OS distribution curve really changed between August 15 and September 1, when a number of devices (EVO 4G, Droid Incredible, etc.) were updated from Android 2.1 to Android 2.2.
These numbers should shift mroe significantly during the month of November, however. Samsung and its carrier partners plan to update the Galaxy S line of smartphones from Android 2.1 Eclair to Android 2.2 Froyo. Samsung and its partners have sold more than 2 million Galaxy S phones in the U.S. alone, with millions more sold around the globe.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab goes on sale this month, and it runs Android 2.2. T-Mobile is launching the myTouch 4G this month, which also runs Android 2.2. These will help up the percentage of 2.2-running phones.
Android provides these numbers every two weeks so developers may make more effective use of their time updating and developing for the various versions of Android.
