Oops, Sprint 'Overstated' EVO 4G Sales FiguresOops, Sprint 'Overstated' EVO 4G Sales Figures
Well, this is embarrassing. Sprint issued a correction overnight, indicating that it was perhaps a little too excited about first-day sales of the HTC EVO 4G. It is still the best-selling Sprint handset, but not by as large a margin as previously stated by Sprint CEO Dan Hesse.

It is still the best-selling Sprint handset, but not by as large a margin as previously stated by Sprint CEO Dan Hesse.Hmm, not entirely sure what to make of this. Did they count wrong? Did Sprint exaggerate a wee bit on purpose? Was it too giddy, and perhaps make too much use of hyperbole? Or did they just screw up the math completely? Any way you look at it, Sprint made a mistake with its initial announcement of EVO 4G sales. Here's how Sprint words the correction:
June 4, 2010 sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint - the record was previously held by both Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre. Launch day sales of HTC EVO 4G were six times greater than launch day sales of Samsung Instinct and nearly twice the launch day sales for Palm Pre. We continue to see sales of EVO 4G outpace sales of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre.
We originally reported that the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined. We inadvertently erred in the comparison. The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.
So, in other words, Sprint originally said that it sold three times as many EVO 4Gs as it really did.
The problem with all of this? Sprint is obviously too embarrassed by the actual sales figures to share them. Sprint never told us how many Palm Pres it sold opening weekend. Sprint never said how many Instinct's it sold opening weekend. And now it's not telling us how many EVO 4G's it sold over the weekend. All we have to go on is Sprint's word (*sniggle sniggle*) that it sold a lot of them.
Hey, Sprint, here's an idea. Why don't you give us the actual sales data so we can make our own observations and conclusions.
