Palm CEO Ed Colligan said in an interview that the next-generation Palm OS, codenamed "Nova" and due out early next year, will be focused on "Internet and Web-based applications."The new OS is expected to be based on Linux, with a compatibiliity layer for legacy Palm applications. Phones running the new OS will be released under a new brand name and be positioned in between the current entry-level Centros and Palm's Treo smartphones.

Nova may even lead to a revival of the canceled Foleo mobile PC. "The core decision behind that product cancellation was really driven by that we were developing this whole new operating system that is going to bring a new user experience," said Colligan. "[The Foleo] had been started under a different design center, a different thought process and a different set of system software. I really want there to be one Palm user experience, and so we?ll come back around to that idea when we?re done delivering that experience."Electronista, The Register
