Pigeon Transports Data Faster Than ASDL!Pigeon Transports Data Faster Than ASDL!
A carrier pigeon thrashed a local ASDL service in transporting 4 gigabytes of data 60 miles in a South African showdown watched by several billion (well, actually, a few hundred) people around the world on Facebook and Twitter. In the two hours it took the pigeon to deliver its memory-stick payload, the ASDL service was able to transmit only 4% of the data.
A carrier pigeon thrashed a local ASDL service in transporting 4 gigabytes of data 60 miles in a South African showdown watched by several billion (well, actually, a few hundred) people around the world on Facebook and Twitter. In the two hours it took the pigeon to deliver its memory-stick payload, the ASDL service was able to transmit only 4% of the data."Broadband promised to unite the world wit super-fast data delivery-but in South Africa it seems the web is still no faster than a humble pigeon," BBC News reports.
The provider of the local ASDL service-the country's biggest web firm-emphasized that it was not responsible for letting a carrier pigeon outperform it with such winged dispatch, said a BBC News article:
"Several recommendations have, in the past, been made to the customer but none of these have, to date, been accepted," Telkom's Troy Hector told South Africa's Sapa news agency in an e-mail.
The pigeon, 11 months old and named Winston, is not believed to have used any performance-enhancing birdseed, the article said. "He is happy to be back at the office and is now just chilling with his friends," the article quoted an observer as saying.
And while some might think the whole thing was just a bird-brained stunt, we can all be fairly certain that Telkom's not exactly flapping its wings with joy over this flighty development.
