Samsung on Monday introduced a Symbian-powered smartphone that it said is optimized for a customer's professional and personal life.
The i7110 is a relatively slim, candy bar-shaped handset that has Symbian OS version 9.3, S. 60 3rd, Feature Pack 2, which means users can easily choose from thousands of applications from the S60 app library. These apps can be quickly launched by using dedicated hot keys.
For workers on the go, the i7110 has a built-in organizer and is capable of receiving push corporate e-mail. There's integrated Wi-Fi, and the handset's 3G connectivity is capable of a maximum downlink speed of 3.6 Mbps.
The GPS chip can be used in conjunction with cellular data for assisted GPS services like location-based searches, and geotagging of photos. There's also an organizer, voice dialing, and built-in hands-free controls.
"We are excited to welcome the latest Samsung smartphone to the Symbian device portfolio," Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford said in a statement. "The i7110's stylish design and advanced functionality combines the very best of easy-to-use mobile information and entertainment services with the highest level of power efficiency and reliability from Symbian OS."
The smartphone has a 2.6-inch OLED screen that should provide crisp images, and an accelerometer automatically adjusts the screen's orientation depending on how the user's holding it.
Samsung's smartphone is also a capable media player, as it's able to play multiple codecs of audio and video. There's a built-in FM radio and TV-out functionality, and Bluetooth can be used to pair up stereo headsets.
Shutterbugs may like the handset, as it has a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus and LED flash. The camera's capable of recording video, and there's a secondary front-facing camera for videoconferencing. To store these photos and other files, the memory can be expanded up to 16 GB via the MicroSD slot.
The smartphone measures 4.6 by 2 by 0.5 inches, and Samsung estimated it could get up to 11 hours of talk time. The company said the i7110 will be available in "select regions" in November, but there was no mention of the price.
