Sanyo has introduced a pocketsize dual camera that can record full high-definition video.
The Xacti VPC-PD2BK, unveiled Thursday, can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second through a 3x optical zoom lens. In addition, the camera can take 10-megapixel still images.
The latest member of the Xacti line is about the size of a deck of cards and includes software for sharing photos and videos on social networks, such as You Tube and Facebook. The device also has a microphone on each side for recording sound and supports SD, SDHC or SDXC external memory cards of up to 64 GB.
Other specifications include a 37 mm wide-angle lens and a mini-HDMI port for video playback on a digital television. The camera weighs 3.7 ounces and has a USB port that can be used in recharging the battery.
The Xacti VPC-PD2BK is scheduled to be available in September with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $170.
Sanyo's latest consumer electronic competes with Cisco's Flip camcorder. In April, Cisco launched the Flip SlideHD with a slide-up, three-inch touch screen for watching video and navigating through the user's video library.
The latest Flip, however, does not record in full HD, but in a resolution of 720p, which creates smaller files for sharing video online. The Flip SlideHD has a suggested retail price of $280.
The Flip is a popular pocketsize camcorder in the United States. Cisco acquired the Flip line through the acquisition of Pure Digital Technologies for $590 million in stock in March 2009. At the time, more than 2 million Flip cameras had been sold since their introduction in 2007. Cisco claims the number now stands at more than 4 million.
