So it was nice to see a big client lavish praise on Satyam's employees upon completion of a complex SAP project vital to India's security and national defense.

Most of Satyam's 40,000 employees, who had nothing to do with the financial fraud that nearly destroyed the company earlier this year, have spent the past three months dutifully serving their customers and fulfilling their professional obligations. So it was nice to see a big client lavish praise on Satyam's employees upon completion of a complex SAP project vital to India's security and national defense.The SOA-based ERP solution from SAP has gone live at Mazagon Dock, one of India's leading shipbuilders, and Satyam's team was recognized by Mazagon officials for their diligent work during difficult times.
"The commitment and hard work by the Satyam team to successfully implement this complex a system on schedule -- and in spite of recent distractions -- is especially commendable," said Mazagon Dock chairman and managing director Vice Admiral H.S. Malhi.
Another Mazagon official, finance director G.A.R. Rao, added, "Achieving system 'go-live' is a major accomplishment, and I applaud Satyam's success in rapidly assimilating the complex processes and procedures involved in the construction of a ship and mapping them to SAP functionalities."
On the one hand we can look at this and say, "Big deal - they were just doing the job they get paid to do." But I find it hard to imagine the distractions that all Satyam employees must have been facing, almost nonstop, for the past three months since the revelation that company founder and CEO B. Ramalinga Raju had been misstating revenue and earnings for years.
Several years ago, when Enron collapsed, we heard the tragic stories of tens of thousands of honest, decent, hard-working Enron employees whose livelihoods were destroyed by a handful of corrupt top executives. In many cases, encouraged by top officials, those Enron employees invested huge portions of their life savings in Enron stock, which ended up worthless.
In a similar way, the 40,000+ Satyam employees still serving clients were victimized by events far out of their control, and are to be commended for their commitment and service to their clients at Mazagon and many other organizations.
As University of Michigan Professor M.S. Krishnan pointed out in a Global CIO guest column shortly after the scandal broke:
"The operational implementation team at Satyam has recently won several accolades from global IT vendors such as the Pinnacle award from SAP in June 2008. This award is granted to leading SAP partners who have excelled at enhancing the customer experience and addressing critical issues such as accelerating innovation and improving returns on investments.
Similarly, Satyam received two prestigious shared-services excellence awards last year from the International Quality and Productivity Council. Unlike the corporate-governance awards cited above that are based on subjective judgment, these operational delivery awards are based on actual customer experience and delivery."
