West Hills High School in Santee, Calif., began the school year by turning a virtual eye on all who enter its campus.

The school is using cameras to feed images to a password-protected Web site where school staff or local police can view them. The images can be transmitted to handhelds that school officials and security staff will use on campus.

The changes align West Hills with other schools in its district, which use surveillance equipment because of shootings last year on two campuses.
