It looks like Sony Ericsson has been hit with a big can of sanity, as it may be moving away from its M2 memory standard in favor of a microSD card. Hopefully this means the company is moving away from the proprietary roots that Sony stubbornly continues to champion.According to the blokes at Trusted Reviews, the company is going with microSD for the recently-announced Satio, Aino, and Yari phones and for future devices. The site quotes an executive who said the company is moving in the direction of ditching M2 altogether for the microSD standard.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a major revelation, but this is great news for end users because you won't be locked in to Sony's products. Trusted Reviews lists the long line of the Memory Stick line and it included Memory Stick, Memory Stick Select, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and Memory Stick Micro. Sure, there's miniSD and microSD, but it's nowhere near as convoluted as Sony's mess.

This is just the latest sign that we're going to see some more standardization in the mobile phone industry, as the CTIA recently endorsed a universal charger standard based on microUSB. Standardizing charging points and accessories seem like a no-brainer to me because it cuts down on manufacturing costs, and it can lead to a better end-user experience.
