Over the weekend, specifications for the unannounced Motorola Android handset were passed about the Internet. The Motorola Morrison looks like it will be shooting for the middle of the market, though it does have some surprise features. If you were thinking that Motorola's first Android handset needs to be a home run, you're not alone. The Morrison, sadly, isn't that home run, though it might be a solid double. We'll see.
According to the specifications, it will be a budget-friendly handset. The device, which is a slider and includes a full QWERTY keyboard for messaging, will be powered by a Qualcomm 528MHz CPU. In case you were wondering, that's the same engine firing inside the HTC G1. Other performance features include 256MB of RAM and 512MB of flash memory. Not bad. This can be enhanced by microSD storage cards up to 32GB, which are supported in by the Morrison's expansion slot.
As for radios, 3G is definitely included, as is Wi-Fi, GPS and (most likely) Bluetooth. The Morrison will have a 320x480 HVGA display (that's pretty good) as well as a number of sensors on board to make interacting with the device even more fun. They include an ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, and magnetometer. That means the device will be able to support things such as gaming, motion controls, compass applications, etc.
On the media side of things, it looks as though the Morrison will have a 5 megapixel camera (which is quite a large camera for most U.S. wireless carriers). The camera will have autofocus, video capture, geo-tagging and other features such as white balance control. This is the one surprising feature. Perhaps the 5 megapixel camera will be the next collaboration Motorola has with Kodak.
So, just when will this wonder-device from Motorola hit the streets? Reports suggest that it will be available on or about October 21 (yep, three long months from now).
Until then, we'll have to make do with HTC's Android handsets.
