The Motorola Droid has been one of the company's best-selling handsets in a long time. If you believe Motorola Sanjay Jha, Motorola can hardly keep up with demand even though the device has been in the market for more than six months. "(Droid) sales are going extremely well. If I could build more I'd sell more," Jha said.

Despite its popularity, it's time Motorola fielded a follow-up device, and the recently spied Droid 2 could be it. A blog called Droid Life was given was information about the device from a tipster, who also provided images and video of the Droid 2 in action.

At a glance, it looks nearly identical to the original Droid. The Droid 2's keyboard, however, appears to have been completely redesigned. Based on the pictures, the keys themselves are more domed, which should make them easier to use. The original Droid's keyboard is among the worst I've used. The Droid's keys are essentially flat, making them very difficult to tell apart when your thumbs are dancing across the keys.

It appears as though the directional-pad has been removed for the Droid 2. I find this curious. The D-pad was actually a nice tool to have, which allowed users to fine-tune text entry. Its absence should allow Motorola to expand the size of the keyboard, which could also help make it more usable for typing. The rest of the Droid 2's hardware appears to be mostly untouched.

Droid Life was given information about the specs of the Droid 2, and it is here that we see more changes. The Droid 2 will be powered by a 750MHz OMAP processor. That's a 25% improvement over the Droid's current ability to "scale up to 600MHz." Wi-Fi tethering software is said to be included, as is 8GB of internal storage with an 8GB microSD card preinstalled. The camera stays at 5 megapixels, and the display stays at 3.7 inches.

What's lacking from the redesign? Well, there's no HDMI port, there's no front-facing camera, and there's no Android 2.2, as far as we know. Since there's no front-facing camera, it would be safe to assume that the Droid 2 isn't one of the handsets Motorola Sanjay Jha recently said would offer video calling.

In all, these appear to be decent, though incremental, updates for an already-good device.
