Microsoft confirms plans to enhance database with more features to aid knowledge workers

Microsoft is building basic reporting capabilities into the next release of its SQL Server database, set to begin testing by midyear. New features will let corporate developers build applications that tap into those reporting functions. SQL Server already includes data-transformation and -analysis tools.

The features will provide basic reporting capabilities to a broad range of knowledge workers, delivering information through Microsoft's Sharepoint portal and desktop applications such as Excel. But they won't replace sophisticated reporting tools from vendors such as Business Objects, Cognos, and Crystal Decisions. "I haven't met a customer who relies solely on Microsoft for their business-intelligence needs," says Ventana Research analyst Mark Smith. Microsoft disclosed plans to add reporting features to SQL Server last week after word leaked from analysts and customers who'd been briefed on the project.
