Microsoft is building basic reporting capabilities into the next release of its SQL Server database, known as Yukon, that's scheduled to begin beta testing by midyear. The new features will let corporate developers and software vendors develop applications that tap into those reporting functions. Microsoft already builds data-transformation and analysis features into SQL Server.

The addition to SQL Server will provide basic reporting capabilities to a range of knowledge workers. But Microsoft says they won't replace sophisticated reporting tools from vendors such as Business Objects, Cognos, and Crystal Decisions. At least one analyst agrees. "I haven't met a customer who relies solely on Microsoft for their business-intelligence needs," says Ventana Research's Mark Smith.

Microsoft disclosed its plans to add reporting features to SQL Server on Wednesday after word leaked from analysts and customers who had been briefed about the project. The news initially caused stock prices for Business Objects, Cognos, and other business-intelligence tool suppliers to tumble.
