Emerging speech-technology standards could give a boost to an industry hampered by proprietary software and hardware. The World Wide Web Consortium is backing VoiceXML and XHTML; Cisco Systems, Intel, Microsoft, and others are developing the SALT spec. Both standards are designed to let a computer request information via a cell phone or PDA and get a text response.
