Storage Technology Corp. Monday unveiled storage-management software tailored to meet the needs of a variety of professionals within a company.

Global Storage Manager Version 4 was developed by StorageTek's Storability Software division, which is the product of a recent acquisition. With the latest version, a CIO could access the tool and check the status of compliance efforts and staying within budget, for example, while a system administrator at the same time could check on storage system operations and data availability.

An industry analyst thinks StorageTek listened to customers for these ease-of-use enhancements, but needs to catch up with functionality like auto-provisioning. "But GSM is well beyond the competition with reporting," says Nancy Hurley, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "It tailors the information to a particular user."

GSM 4.0 pricing ranges from $150,000 to $400,000, depending on the configuration.
