Wednesday was mixed on Wall Street as takeover antics helped boost the Nasdaq, but profit-taking sank the Dow Jones.

PeopleSoft (PSFT) rose 4.5%, or 78 cents, to $17.93, after Oracle (ORCL) raised its takeover bid for the company. Oracle itself was up 0.5%, or 7 cents, to $13.42. J.D. Edwards (JDEC), which is in the process of being bought by PeopleSoft, rose 1.5%, or 21 cents, to $14.10. Competitor Siebel Systems (SEBL) rose 2.8%, or 31 cents, to $11.38. The Nasdaq-100 Index tracking stock rose 6%, or 19 cents, to $30.95, on volume of 79.7 million shares.

Our information 100 rose 1.4%, or 3.58 points, to 259.79, and the Nasdaq index rose 0.5%, or 8.71 points, to $1,677.15. Meanwhile, less tech-heavy indexes inched downward. The Dow fell 0.3%, or 29.22 points, to 9,293.8, and the S&P 500 fell 0.2%, or 1.57 points, to 1,010.09.
