Monday was a good buying day for the few who were actually buying on a semi-holiday. Most everyone thinks stocks rose smartly Monday because of optimism about third-quarter results.

Our information 100 index rose 1.4%, or 4.2 points, to close at 303.64. Next up was the Nasdaq, which rose 0.95%, or 18.22 points, to 1,933.53; and right behind the Nasdaq, the Dow rose 0.93%, or 89.7 points, to 9,764.38. The S&P 500 rose 0.7%, or 7.29 points, to close at 1,045.35.

The Nasdaq-100 tracking stock, which we like to monitor as another indicator of tech-share trading, rose 0.7%, or 23 cents, to $35.24 on moderate trading of 60 million shares.
