Teenagers are often their parents' teachers when it comes to computers, and they are expected to continue in that role as they persuade mom and dad to use wireless technologies and services, a market research firm said Tuesday.
Teenagers and young adults are the classic early adopters of technology, and are often the most effective marketers to the older generation, International Data Corp. said. This year, 40 percent of 15 to 19 year olds are expected to be wireless subscribers.
"IDC believes that one of the most important aspects of youth and young adult usage of wireless is the creation of the perfect mini-ecosystem for advanced wireless applications," IDC analyst Scott Ellison said in a statement. "Youth and young adults can teach their parents and other adults about new wireless data applications."
With so many young people carrying cellular phones, service providers have a good opportunity to sell data applications that help family members and friends stay in touch, IDC said.
