TerreStar has announced that they have successfully completed a call using mobile handsets with their recently launched satellite. How does a phone network sound that would be accessible from virtually anywhere?TerreStar won't be global of course, but once the service launches, you should be able to connect from just about anywhere in North America. I just completed a drive from New York to Los Angeles. Even with the ability to roam on various networks and use the Verizon MiFi for network access when my phone's T-Mobile signal was weak or non-existent, there were still a lot of areas where I had no signal anywhere. I don't understand why there are gaps in coverage in the Mojave Desert. There is so much room there for towers.

According to WM Experts, the phone is running Windows Mobile. According to the screen shot, it is WinMo 6.5 and has a touch screen. The phone pictured is also pretty small with no bulky antenna for satellite reception.

There is no word on cost yet, either of the service or the handsets. I am sure it will be on the expensive side, but if total coverage is what you need, keep an eye on their progress. Meanwhile, if you are ever in northern New Mexico, your best bet for a reliable signal may be to find a Starbucks with a WiFi hotspot.
