Tibco Software Inc. plans to ship a new application integration tool for small-business projects.

BusinessWorks, which will be available to a few selected companies in December and widely available in January, uses a simplified graphical user interface for building and tying together application interfaces. The so-called "rapid deployment integration tool" works on top of Tibco's Rendezvous message bus and also supports Java Messaging Service and Soap standards for integration. For example, BusinessWorks could be used to link an order-status component in a Siebel Systems Inc. application with a fulfillment application in a database system.

Jeff Dirks, executive VP of Capital Stream Inc., a Seattle company that helps financial businesses connect applications over the Internet, is deploying several of Tibco's other integration products. Dirks says BusinessWorks provides a one-step deployment process within a software environment that has tools for visual design, testing, deploying, and managing application connections that collectively would comprise a business process. "As we integrate and deploy their business process management suite, I see BusinessWorks as a logical progression from that baseline that we could use next year," he says.

Tibco executives say BusinessWorks would be a good fit for companies that haven't done much application integration and are looking for a tool to start to link applications within a department. Targeted vertical industries included retail, health care, and insurance.

BusinessWorks will sell for an average $500,000.
