One of the government's top IT officials, Jim Flyzik, will become a government technology consultant the day after he retires from a 28-year career in government on Dec. 17. Flyzik, special adviser for IT to homeland security czar Tom Ridge and former Treasury Department CIO, will form the firm with two IT consultants, Robert Guerra and Philip Kiviat. It will focus on helping private-sector clients identify potential business opportunities with government IT.

Guerra's and Kiviat's current roster of clients numbers 20. They're mostly major companies, but also smaller niche solution providers that focus on productivity, personnel, and IT-based apps.

Since early 1998, Flyzik, who announced his retirement early last month, served as vice chair of the federal CIO Council. He also serves as a member of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. Flyzik was deputy assistant secretary for IS and CIO at Treasury from 1997 through last spring. He also served as Treasury's acting assistant secretary for management from Jan. 20, 2001, until last Feb. 8. Prior to his Treasury positions, Flyzik worked for 15 years at the U.S. Secret Service, where he held key IT management positions.
