With the release of its latest 3G USB modem, Verizon Wireless is trying to make it easier for globe trotters to stay connected on the go.

The AD3700 Mobile Broadband USB modem provides wireless data connectivity in the United States and abroad. The device, made by ZTE, can use Verizon's EV-DO Rev.A network for 3G services, as well as EDGE and HSPA/UMTS networks for Internet connectivity.

The 3G modem comes with software that handles connection management, and the modem can automatically detect and connect to the fastest available data network. The USB modem launches Friday, and it costs $79.99 after a mail-in rebate. Data plans generally cost about $60 a month in the United States with a 5-GB monthly cap, but Verizon has not yet said how much international data access will cost.

As more professionals need to stay connected on the go, the wireless carriers are looking for new ways to use their mobile data networks to generate revenue. Mobile broadband modems have seen phenomenal growth over the last few years, and ABI Research expects the market to swell from $3 billion in 2007 to $22 billion in 2013.

This has led to a plethora of new products that enable customers to utilize carriers' data networks to get online. Along with standard USB modems, Sprint Nextel and Verizon have released a device that enables users to turn a 3G connection into a personal Wi-Fi cloud. The MiFi creates a secure Wi-Fi hotspot that can connect devices like a smartphone, laptop, gaming device, or a personal music player.
