Verizon Wireless on Tuesday issued invitations to the media and asked them to attend an event to be held in New York City. The invitation said that speakers at the event will include Verizon Wireless' marketing chief, John Stratton; Google's lead Android architect Andy Rubin; Motorola Co-CEO Sanjay Jha, and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen. The invitation clearly says that the companies will announce the next Droid handset for the Verizon Wireless network.

Based on the list of speakers, we can make several assumptions about what's being announced. First, the device will be made by Motorola (not HTC). Second, since Adobe's CEO will be present, the device will likely ship with Android 2.2 Froyo and come with Flash Player 10.1 installed. There's no other reason for Shantanu to be there. The invitation doesn't share any details about the device itself. The event takes place at Noon on Wednesday, June 23.

Curious to know what this motley crew is going to announce? Engadget claims it will be the Motorola Droid X, which it posted a lengthy preview of. The blog spent several hours with the device and came away with plenty of information about the latest Droid for Verizon Wireless.

The device is similar to the HTC EVO 4G in that it is a slab-style phone. There's no physical QWERTY keyboard on this one, so you'll have to do all your typing on the screen. Luckily, Swype's software is on board, which eases the pain of typing on touch screens. Speaking of the screen, it measures a whopping 4.4 inches and packs in 854 x 480 pixels. Engadget reports that the display looks great.

The Droid X will -- somewhat surprisingly -- run a newer version of Motoblur. Motoblur is Motorola's social networking software that streams status updates to the home screen. According to Engadget, this new software is toned down when compared to the original incarnation of Motoblur and isn't "in your face."

It has an 8 megapixel camera, records video at 720p, but Engadget said the camera software was buggy. What's really interesting is that the Droid X will come with an HDMI port. HD video anyone?

Engadget reports that the Droid X is "snappy," and believes the device is powered by a 1GHz processor, though that is not confirmed. It comes with 8GB of on-board storage.

Whether or not this is the device that Motorola and Verizon Wireless plan to announce week, we don't know for certain, but it is highly likely.
