Western Digital has released its next-gen 10,000 RPM SATA Raptor drive.The $300 VelociRaptor holds up to 300 GB of data, which doubles the capacity of the drive's predecessor and runs 35 percent faster, according to WD. VelociRaptor is both PC- and Mac-compatible and is designed for a 3.5-inch drive bay. The drive, itself, is 2.5 inches -- "an innovative new design approach to achieving a high-performance desktop hard drive," according to The Washington Post -- and is mounted into a heat sink sled to keep it running cooler than the previous version.

While WD is aiming its new drive as gamers and PC enthusiasts, its mean time between failure (MTBF) of 1.2 million hours makes is suitable for business use, as well.The Washington Post
