Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't even a month old yet and already an update has been spotted. No, not WinMo 7. Just a minor update that mobile platform watchers have started calling 6.5.1. What updates has Microsoft included in this build?
Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't even a month old yet and already an update has been spotted. No, not WinMo 7. Just a minor update that mobile platform watchers have started calling 6.5.1. What updates has Microsoft included in this build?According to the I Started Something blog, the minor update is more finger friendly and faster. I've heard complaints that the further you dig into WinMo 6.5, the more likely you are to find an old dialog box from the olden days that is best navigated with a stylus. Perhaps Microsoft is stamping out a few of those old UI issues in minor updates to the OS.
Wikipedia has a few of the new and improved features listed. They include:
Icon based soft buttons rather than text buttons
Updated contacts application
Built in support for aGPS
Improved threaded SMS messages
There is no indication as to when, or if, these changes will be released on new phones. It would go a long way to restoring some enthusiasm for the platform if Microsoft did release these changes directly to the end user via the seldom used Windows Update control panel app instead of doing what they have for the past decade on their mobile platform, which is to release nothing directly. They instead have relied on carriers and manufacturers to do it, but they already have their money. Free updates means less incentive to buy new devices. Microsoft, on the other hand, needs people to get excited about the platform once again and minor updates is one way to accomplish this.
Of course, it is possible these are just incremental builds of various parts of the OS that will make it into WinMo 7 next year.
