Though attendance was down at Comdex, Bill Gates had no trouble attracting a crowd for his keynote address. But the highlight of his speech for many attendees-aside from a video clip showing the Microsoft chairman in his office dressed as Harry Potter--was another look at Microsoft's Xbox game system, launched last week in New York.

At one point in his speech, Gates watched the Xbox boot up in about 10 seconds, then shut down with the push of a button. His reaction: "We ought to do that for the PC."
