Broadband infrastructure provider Airvana this week launched software for EV-DO Rev. A that gives service providers increased visibility into the real-time performance of multimedia services.

EV-DO wireless technology is utilized by some 70 operator networks in the world, including Verizon Wireless, Sprint, Alltel, and U.S. Cellular in the United States. Airvana's Release 7 provides a brace of enhancements for EV-DO, including features that enable operators to view metrics like throughput and latency across entire networks. Essentially, Release 7 enhances the CDMA EV-DO infrastructure that has been developed by Qualcomm.

Release 7 can also be used to zero in on specific markets or geographic regions and even on individual subscriber sessions. "This level of visibility makes it easier for operators to pinpoint the source of any service disruption and accelerate problem resolution," Airvana stated in a release.

The new release also enhances Airvana's radio network controller (RNC) clustering technology, enabling users to increase the number of sites from six to eight for inclusion in a single supercluster. RNC helps operators establish their IP networks to maintain connectivity as users cross cell boundaries, in the process expanding capacity. The release is available for new EV-DO rollouts and also as a software upgrade for existing EV-DO deployments.

"EV-DO gives operators tremendous opportunity to continue to deliver innovative mobile broadband services on a very robust network," said David Nowicki, Airvana's VP of marketing and product management, in a statement. "With Release 7, we're providing important new service quality capabilities to help operators generate a positive experience across the entire subscriber base."
