Microsoft's Windows 7 Phone Revealed

Amazon.com introduced Thursday a Kindle app for Windows Phone 7 that includes features not yet available on other Kindle software, such as the ability to send e-book suggestions to friends without leaving the application.

The app, which is scheduled to ship this year, was demonstrated during Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer's keynote at the company's Professional Developers Conference. The first smartphones equipped with WP7 are expected to hit the market starting Nov. 8, with the first coming from Samsung, LG and HTC.

The new features in the reading software for digital books include the ability to send an e-book suggestion from any book in a person's library. In addition, Amazon.com has added personalized book recommendations on the user's home screen.

Beyond the new features, the application has the same capabilities as the Kindle app on other devices. Those features include the ability to buy e-books from Amazon.com and to synchronize the last page read across however many devices the user has the application installed. Amazon.com offers a library of more than 725,000 e-books.

Amazon.com has released Kindle apps for the Apple iPhone and iPad; smartphones running Google's Android operating system, Research in Motion's BlackBerry, the Mac and the PC.

The latest addition will be available for download from Amazon.com and the WP7 online store. People interested in the application can sign up on Amazon.com to receive an alert for when it is ready. Microsoft says a thousand applications have already been uploaded by developers to the WP7 store.

Also available from Amzon.com later this year, will be a book-lending feature that'll be available on all the Kindle apps. The feature will enable users to share books with each other for 14 days. Rival Barnes & Noble has had a similar feature in its Nook e-reader since last year.
