Global CIO: Calling Oracle & IBM Outdated, Tibco Launches Enterprise 3.0Global CIO: Calling Oracle & IBM Outdated, Tibco Launches Enterprise 3.0
Tibco CEO Vivek Ranadive' describes how event-driven businesses anticipate demand and stop problems before they happen. (Part 1 of a 2-part series.)
"How do you deal with that exponential increase in information? We're talking about hundreds of terabytes, potentially petabytes, of information that are being generated; we're talking about micro-second response times; and now we're saying it has to come to you—it has to be event-driven," he said.
"So in order to solve these problems of the 21st century, we have to have 21st-century solutions; we can't simply apply 20th-century techniques to solving 21st-century problems. Even in the domain of how you manage that data, we also have to shift to a 21st-century model.
"First generation, Enterprise 1.0, we were dealing with essentially a flat file; it was a row. Then with the advent of Enterprise 2.0, it was client-server computing, it became rows and columns, and you had a relational model. We're now dealing with exponentially more information in exponentially less time, and where it's coming to you: event-driven. So two dimensions isn't going to be enough; we have to move to the third dimension. Name and value isn't going to be sufficient; we have to add context to that. We have to move to a whole event-driven platform of the next generation in order to solve these 21st-century problems."
In Ranadive's keynote talk to open the conference, he concluded by saying that the shortcoming of Enterprise 2.0 was that it always left businesses with more questions than answers about the future.
"With Enterprise 2.0, it was always, 'I wish I knew, I wish I knew.'
"But with Enterprise 3.0, you'll know. You will know."
