The idea of working trapped in a cubicle all day is fading, now that more people are adopting a more mobile work style. However, when a mobile phone doesn't work like a computer, it can hurt productivity. The bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement so far largely has been limited to email, photo sharing, and document sharing.

Recognizing this trend and the need to make it easier to collaborate on the go, Good Technology announced Wednesday that it acquired Copiun for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition is a move to allow workers to collaborate on their mobile phones more securely.

A number of major corporate and government entities use Good Technology products because they secure and contain all work-related email, photos, and calendars on a number of devices--essentially giving iPhones and Android phones the super-secure encryption of a BlackBerry. Copiun's TrustedShare technology lets workers share files, including Microsoft SharePoint, without a VPN connection or other secure connection. Copiun also allows IT to control the entire life cycle of the document as well as apps and data that go through the devices. It works on both personal via BYOD or corporate-issued devices, using Good's AES 192 encryption.

Copiun is based in Marlborough, Mass., and will become a Good Technology branch once the transaction is complete in September.

"Our acquisition of Copiun will help us deliver a complete solution that boosts mobile worker productivity and collaboration while protecting data and applications on today’s popular mobile devices—both personally owned (BYOD) and company-supplied," John Herrema, senior VP of corporate strategy for Good, told BYTE.
