The upcoming version of Google's Chrome browser includes the company's new search-as-you-type technology called Instant. Google has released the developer version of the Chrome 8 browser, which includes the company's recently announced instant search feature.

Google announced the release of the latest version of the software Tuesday through its Chrome developer blog. The browser is not recommended for general use.

Among the new features is the ability to turn on Google's new instant search, according to the developer site WebMonkey. Google introduced the technology last month during a news conference at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Called Google Instant, the feature delivers search results as the user types. In Chrome 8, the technology runs as a person types a query in the browser's URL bar. The feature represents Google's latest effort at accelerating search to the point of prediction by presenting search results before the user completes the query.

In Chrome, if the browser recognizes a URL being typed, then Chrome goes directly to the website. Otherwise, the browser displays search results as the person types.

Chrome 8 is still a ways off, given that Google last month released Chrome 6 on the two-year anniversary of when Google shipped the first beta of the browser. The official 1.0 release followed a few months later.

Google, however, is releasing Chrome versions quickly as it hopes to improve its position in the browser market. As of the end of September, Chrome accounted for slightly less than 8% of the browser market, up almost 1% from May, according to Web metrics firm NetApplications. Third-place Chrome's gains during the five-month period came as leading browser Internet Explorer from Microsoft fell 0.10% to 59.65% and second-place Mozilla Firefox fell more than one percentage point to 22.96%.
