IBM Releases Major Informix UpgradeIBM Releases Major Informix Upgrade
New release has a smaller footprint, offers enhanced encryption, and can be embedded in Java apps more easily.
IBM has released Informix Dynamic Server Version 10, the next generation of its Informix database server and the most significant revision of the software since IBM acquired Informix in 2001.
IBM has shrunk the Informix database footprint and made it easier to embed it within a Java application. Informix is built into applications used in telecommunications, retail, health care, and government. IBM also plans to debut an Express version of Informix for small and midsize businesses in the second quarter.
Version 10 has been enhanced to handle data encryption to meet security requirements set by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Basel II, and HIPAA. IBM also simplified administration of the system by giving the database administrator access to the core engine, while shutting out other users. The administrator may establish replicated databases anywhere on the network by using templates that simplify enterprise replication.
The database's Backup and Restore utilities have been added for better log management facilities and to speed setup of secondary servers, IBM officials say. Informix Dynamic Server is available immediately, with an entry-level Workgroup version priced at $1,000.
