If the essence of open source is collaboration, it makes sense that the discussions about it have some collaborative flavor. Such is the case with an upcoming event about open source licensing, where the discussion's being shaped ahead of time by third-party contributors.

The Free and Open Source Software Learning Center, a Canada-based nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and usage of open source, has an upcoming event on August 31st entitled "Which open source license is best?" Among the folks participating are Mike Milinkovich (executive director of the Eclipse Foundation), Matt Asay of Alfresco (and also of the "Open Road" blog at CNet, and David Maxwell of Coverity will all be stumping for their license of choice -- Eclipse, GPL and BSD, respectively. (If you can't attend in person, you can register to watch a webcast of the event.)

What's really nice is that audience members can register in advance and submit or vote on questions to be asked during the discussion. The whole thing's being handled via Google's Moderator app, so you'll need an account (free) to submit questions or vote on existing ones. Most of the existing questions are good, but if you have an idea that you want to hear debated, sign on and submit it.

information Analytics has published an independent analysis of the next-generation Web applications. Download the report here (registration required).
