Moxie Software is adding an iPhone app and a private YouTube-like video uploading and transcoding feature to the latest version of its Employee Spaces enterprise social network.

Moxie offers two main products, the outward-facing Customer Spaces and Employee Spaces for private corporate collaboration. The Employee Spaces update announced Monday allows users to upload videos in more than 100 formats and have them automatically transcoded into the MP4 format. The original format is stored for later retrieval, but Employee Spaces uses MP4 for streaming media downloads. Videos can then be incorporated into media galleries, blogs, wikis, discussion forums, Ideastorm brainstorming forums, and employee news articles.

"We see a lot of interest in rich media collaboration and embedded video collaboration," Azita Martin, Moxie chief marketing officer, said in an interview. Managing video can be difficult because of the variety of media formats, so Moxie has worked to simplify it into a YouTube-like process organizations can host within their private social media network. Applications include collaborating around the content of commercials and other creative products, she said.

Moxie also introduced a native iPhone app and improved mobile browser support for the BlackBerry and other smartphones. Mobile users will be able to distribute status updates, follow activity streams, upload images, find and connect with people, work with groups or projects, and search for content.

Moxie said it also upgraded the Employee Spaces recommendation engine, which suggests people, groups, projects, and content based on user preferences and behavior, and the search engine, which is based on Autonomy.

Martin said what distinguishes Employee Spaces is its focus on making people productive and engaged, largely by helping them find other people who can help them with their work. "We believe people work with people, they work in groups, and they work in projects," she said, so the software tries to mirror those relationships.

Employee Spaces gives visible rewards for participation, such as badges users can display on their profiles or a ranking on the Ideastorm application for idea generation. Through integration with other products like Skype and Microsoft Lync, Employee Spaces also tries to present unified presence information for all participants, she said.

The product suite was featured in a video interview with Moxie at last year's Enterprise 2.0 conference in Santa Clara. Moxie is also one of the E2 LaunchPad semifinalists for the upcoming Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston.
