SonicWall today announced the launch of its Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Series, aimed at providing small and medium-size businesses with a continual disk-based backup and recovery solution to protect business-critical data, applications, and systems."Data protection has to be done automatically," Ken Dang, project manager at SonicWall, told me, "and it needs to be recoverable."

Though the trend at smaller companies tends to expect employees themselves to back up their data nightly to tape (when, in reality, they don't always follow that protocol), another emerging trend has people moving from desktop computers to laptops and from central offices to home offices. So SonicWall created its CDP Series to deliver automatic, transparent backup and flexible disaster-recovery options.

The CDP Series is designed to ensure all files are available in multiple historic versions and that all servers and their applications are protected with multiple-point-in-time versions for disaster recovery.

Dang says SonicWall designed the CDP Series as an appliance-based solution with small and midsize companies in mind. He boasted that it took him less than 30 minutes to install the CDP his first time, so it shouldn't take another user much longer.

The CDP Series -- scheduled to be available on Dec. 15 -- includes the CDP 110 ($1,999), 210 ($3,499), 5040 ($8,999), and 6080 ($10,999), with the lower-end model featuring a disk-drive capacity of 400 GB and the 6080 featuring a capacity of 750 GB. Total capacity can reach 3 TB on the 6080 with an Expansion Disk Pack.
