Research In Motion recently introduced the BlackBerry Bold, Flip, and Storm, each featuring updated versions of the BlackBerry user interface.

With this in mind, RIM released Wednesday new tools that enable content creators to develop mobile applications.

"Each new BlackBerry smartphone presents an opportunity for mobile developers to create new applications or extend their innovations with the latest advances in mobile technology and application development," said Alan Brenner, RIM's senior VP for BlackBerry platforms, in a statement.

The Storm is the company's first touch-screen smartphone, and the BlackBerry Java Development Environment version 4.7 lets developers create applications for the Storm with custom user interfaces to receive input from taps, slides, and other gestures. Developers can also take advantage of the accelerometer for motion-controlled apps, controls for the virtual QWERTY keyboards, and camera and media integration.

The BlackBerry JDE version 4.6 is aimed at developers wanting to create programs for the Bold or the clamshell Flip. It integrates location-based service capabilities, scalable vector graphics, and improved calendar and contact list support.

Additionally, RIM said, the tools will offer improved Web page rendering with HTML, Ajax, and JavaScript for browser-based applications. There will also be desktop simulators of the three new smartphones to assist testing.

With the success of Apple's App Store and anticipation for the Android Market, mobile apps figure to play an increasingly prominent role for RIM. The smartphone manufacturer has recently introduced a suite of "lifestyle" apps from TiVo, TicketMaster, and others. Additionally, recent leaks suggest the company may be readying its own app store.
