Samsung Reveals Galaxy TabletSamsung Reveals Galaxy Tablet
Samsung has leaked a picture of its 7-inch Android OS touchscreen tablet computer.
The picture posted Thursday through Twitter showed the "Galaxy Tab" next to Samsung's recently announced Galaxy S smartphone. Samsung apparently posted the picture through its South African blog, which uses the Twitter address: @SamsungBlogSA.
The picture was taken down later in the day, but continued to circulate on the Web. The only details made available about the tablet is that it would have a 7-inch touchscreen, run Google's Android operating systems and would be available in South Africa.
A Samsung spokeswoman in North America referred inquiries on the picture to the company's South African office, but said the company did not plan to release the tablet in the United States. Samsung South Africa was unavailable for comment.
"We have no plans for the Samsung Galaxy Tablet to launch in the U.S. at this time," Samsung's U.S. spokeswoman Jenny Hepworth told information.
If Samsung entered the U.S. tablet market, it would face more than just Apple. Companies planning to fight for share include Asus, MSI, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. With the exception of Asus, the companies plan to release tablets this year. Asus is expected to release its device early next year.
Nevertheless, Apple will be the company to beat. Apple jumpstarted the market for tablet-style computers, often called slates because they lack a physical keyboard. The computer maker has sold more than 2 million iPads since its release in April.
A survey conducted this week by information.com found that many Best Buy stores in major U.S. cities, including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Denver, had no iPads left in stock.
