After gradually beefing up its IT capabilities over the past few years, Staples this week launched its Staples Technology Solutions unit to provide businesses a full range of technology products and services.

The new offering, operating under the aegis of Staples' business-to-business division, is targeting businesses across a variety of sizes from small and medium-sized businesses to large Fortune 1000 corporations.

"Staples Technology Solutions combines expert service, great product selection, and our low cost-to-serve model to satisfy customers who increasingly depend on technology to run their businesses," said Jay Mutschler, senior VP of Staples Advantage, in a statement. "By launching this new line of business, Staples now not only makes it easy to buy everyday office products, but becomes a reliable and cost-effective supplier of network services, data center solutions, and more."

In 2008, Staples announced that its Thrive Networks unit, which had been providing online security, virus, and spyware protection, would offer online backup via EMC's Mozy service. Thrive Networks has also provided remote help desk support.

With its Staples Technology Solutions offering, Staples envisions providing "one stop for IT solutions" in delivering products and services that act as an extension of in-house IT departments or even manage entire IT operations.

Managed services range from on-site and remote service and desktop support for Apple, Microsoft, and Linux platforms, to supplying engineers with certifications from leaders like Cisco, Citrix, and Linux. Data center offerings include sub-floor cleaning and 24/7 data center emergency supply service.
