The U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division this week upgraded its integrated systems-management software from Altiris Inc. to include the ability to remotely manage 3,500 workstations used to support troops in Iraq and Germany. The 1st Infantry Division, which has 1,100 troops deployed in Iraq, uses the workstations for operational planning, E-mail, and briefings.
"Our mission-critical computing systems can't be compromised by the growing number of viruses and worms," Thomas Smart, Army 1st Infantry Division chief DNOC, wrote in an E-mail from Germany. "We use Altiris to automate the discovery of software vulnerabilities, manage patch availability and priority, and deliver critical software updates to protect our desktops and laptops from virus threats."
The division has been using Altiris software since November and plans to upgrade to version 6 of the company's management-infrastructure software.
