The Association of American Medical Colleges will use artificial intelligence to score the writing portion of the Medical College Admission Test.

Vantage Learning and Prometric announced this week that they will provide intelligent, computer-based essay scores beginning this year. The AAMC is using Vantage Learning's IntelliMetric scoring engine as part of an overall plan to switch to fully computer-based testing.

Vantage Learning claims that IntelliMetric can score open-ended responses with greater accuracy and reliability than people and provide faster results. Last year, Prometric announced an agreement to convert the paper-and-pencil MCAT to a computer-based format. The new format allows AAMC to administer the test 22 times annually, up from two.
