Systems-management vendors have been trying to move from offering point products for specific problems to offering a suite of management products that give companies a more complete view of their systems and business processes. BMC Software Inc. on Wednesday unveiled a group of partners that will help the software company deliver on the Business Service Management strategy it kicked off six months ago.

BMC wants to help companies tie their IT efforts more closely to their business strategies and processes. It named IT services firm Accenture, storage leader EMC, and security firm Symantec as partners in its effort.

BMC's Remedy workflow engine gives customers a business view of their IT infrastructure so they can more clearly understand how the technology is operating. Accenture will work with BMC to eliminate gaps in predictive operations. EMC plans to deliver with BMC dynamic storage provisioning, and automated control over it, next spring. Symantec will work with BMC on transaction security. Together, the vendors plan to deliver a full suite of management and security capabilities.

Customers are driving BMC and competitors away from point products toward a full suite of capabilities with an eye on business requirements. "BMC is giving the point products visibility they didn't have and a workflow engine," says Jasmine Noel at JNoel Associates. "With that workflow engine, customers can quickly understand where a problem is and pass it on to the right person."
