CommVault Upgrade Eases Backup ManagementCommVault Upgrade Eases Backup Management
New data-management suite can help companies index and find backed-up copies of crucial files in case of outages.
As more businesses copy files in order to have backups in case of outages or other problems, it can become a challenge to manage all those copies. An upgraded suite of data-management software from CommVault Systems Inc. may help with that chore.
CommVault next week will unveil the second generation of its QiNetix data-management suite, which helps customers match information with the right storage media to meet service-level requirements. Multiple QiNetix components share automated policy management, common job and event managers, indexing, media management, and copy management. Each component of the suite, available now, is priced at $795.
The first new component, Recovery Director, simplifies the overall administration of data-protection services by grabbing and indexing snapshots and replicated versions of information while in transit. One-Touch Restore lets customers install a CD and recover operating-system, data, and system files after an outage. Tiered storage management includes QiNetix DataArchiver, which archives information according to content.
The Recovery Director application can prove valuable to some customers, one analyst says. "Customers create snapshots and remote replication copies that are just floating around," says Diane McAdam, an analyst at IT research firm Data Mobility Group. "Recovery Director could show all these versions in an index, and customers can more easily pick the file they want."
