When EMC decided to go beyond its storage hardware legacy, it had to reach customers outside the world's largest 2,000 or so sites. With a content-management product it unveiled this week, EMC won't even directly sell the new system.

EMC Documentum ApplicationXtender 5.2 (AX5) content-management suite for the Windows .Net environment will be available only through the reseller channel. The vendor is combining its Documentum Records Manager with a Web-based workflow client for document imaging and management, computer output to laser disk, and workflow.

Value-added resellers working with EMC plan to deliver an out-of"the-box product that's simple to deploy and easy to use for customers who don't have the IT resources to implement such functionality on their own. Current and new AX customers can upgrade to version 5.2 by purchasing the EMC Documentum Records Manager module separately.
