The Department of Health and Human Services has tapped Unisys Corp. to help it build a secure E-mail system for 70,000 government employees. Unisys says the deal is worth up to $31 million over five years.

Unisys will use Microsoft Exchange messaging software to create an E-mail system with a common names directory that will help HHS workers more easily send E-mails back and forth across a secure system. The implementation is designed to further Secretary Tommy Thompson's "One HHS" vision, which calls for tighter integration of IT systems across the department's various operating divisions.

Under the deal, Unisys also will provide the department with security-consulting services to help ensure the system's immunity to hackers seeking sensitive government information.
