Logistics-software maker also adds features to support international trade management
Global Logistics Technologies Inc. has updated its Global Command and Control Center logistics and transportation software, adding features to support inventory and international trade management.
Version 4.5 lets companies have a network-wide view of all inventory in the supply chain and adds algorithms that let executives weigh on-hand inventory against transportation costs. This lets managers determine whether it's more efficient to operate for a period with lower inventory than it is to incur the higher costs of obtaining transport for a less-than-full cargo load of items.
That ratchets up a feature of the previous version of the software that logistics provider Total Logistic Control LLC already uses. "We're able to take less-than-truckload shipments and optimize them more quickly into the right mode of transportation using [the software], which helps us save a lot of money," says Bob Koerner, president and chief operating officer of Total Logistic Control.
The software, which provides a single platform for planning and executing the movement of goods, now also provides documentation monitoring and workflow management to speed shipments across borders. Third-party providers still use a lot of people and paper for international logistics, says product marketing director John Murphy, so there's room for improvement in the process.
