Hyperion Solutions Corp. on Thursday reported a 24% revenue surge in its second quarter ended Dec. 31, fueled by its $156 million acquisition of Brio Software and increased demand for its financial applications.

For the quarter, Hyperion reported revenue of $156.1 million, up from $126.0 million in the same period last year. Net income dropped 13% to $6.6 million, or 16 cents per share, reflecting charges associated with the Brio buyout, which closed in October; restructuring charges; and other onetime expenses.

License revenue increased 17% to $59.7 million, including $11 million from Brio, compared with license revenue of $51.1 million one year ago. Godfrey Sullivan, president and chief operating officer, said demand for the company's planning and financial-management applications were each up 38% year over year.

Sullivan couldn't say how much of the improved sales were because of an improving economy or, as often happens, companies exhausting their budgets at the end of the year. "I believe the March quarter will be the real test," he says. For the current quarter, Hyperion expects revenue in the range of $156 million to $161 million and earnings in the range of 23 to 29 cents per share.
