IBM will preview its next-generation DB2 database, code named 'Stinger,' at LinuxWorld next week, the Armonk, N.Y.-based giant announced Tuesday, giving users the first hands-on look at the its ability to scale up to more powerful Linux clusters.

Among the first looks of Stinger at LinuxWorld, IBM will tout DB2 Partition Advisor, a tool integrated with the database that automatically partitions and optimizes performance over multiple servers. IBM claimed that IT administrators would be able to handle such partitioning and optimizing chores in just minutes, rather than the manual time-table of weeks, with the new tool.

IBM will also preview support for the new 2.6 version of the Linux kernel to take advantage of 64-bit databases (such as DB2) and servers that pack multiple processors for creating large Linux clusters.

During the first quarter, developers and customers will also be able to download and preview code that adds support for IBM's 64-bit Power processor line, which is used in the company's pSeries and iSeries servers.
