Flickr is giving holiday camera shoppers a helping hand by showing them the most popular digital cameras used to upload pictures to the photo-sharing site.

The Camera Finder page shows line graphs that reflect the number of Flickr members who have uploaded at least one photo with a particular camera over the last year. The graphs move up or down depending on the devices' popularity relative to other cameras.

As of Wednesday, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT was the most popular digital camera, the Canon PowerShot SD400 was top among point and shoot cameras, and the Sony Ericsson K7501 led among camera phones.

The page includes a drop-down list that visitors can use to compare cameras within a particular brand. On those pages, the graphs reflect use over the last year, as well as over the last 30 days.

The graphs are only accurate to the extent that Flickr can automatically detect the camera used, which the site says it can do two-thirds of the time. That proportion, however, is not usually possible with camera phones, so that category is under-represented.

In addition to helping consumers, Flickr also makes a bit of money through a featured-model section that's a paid advertisement.

Flickr is owned by Yahoo and is part of the portal's Social Media group, which also includes bookmark-sharing service Del.icio.us, and the video-sharing site Jumpcut. In April, Flickr was the fifth largest photo site with 4.82 million unique visitors, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.
