A Release Candidate for the e-mail client is scheduled for the second half of February.
The Mozilla Foundation updated its Thunderbird 2.0 to Beta 2 status Tuesday, marking the latest step toward the open-source e-mail client's scheduled March final release.
Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 2 includes a theme update for Mac OS X, improved previews in new mail alerts, setup for Google's Gmail and Apple's .Mac Web-based accounts, as well as any bug fixes generated from earlier feedback.
The update, which will be distributed automatically to U.S. users of Beta 1, can be downloaded from Mozilla's Web site in 28 languages for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The Mac OS X editions are Universal versions that work on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs.
According to Mozilla's Thunderbird 2.0 roadmap, the e-mailer is to shift into Release Candidate in the second half of February, and release in final form by the end of the first quarter.
The current version, Thunderbird 1.5, was last updated in December 2006, when Mozilla issued several bug fixes to bring the version moniker to 1.5.0.9.
