MySQL AB on Tuesday announced that it had ported its open-source database to the HP-UX operating system on the 64-bit Intel Itanium 2 processor. A 64-bit Windows edition will soon follow, the company said.
The current production version of MySQL 4.0, which is also available for multiple 32-bit operating systems, including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and Solaris, now supports the 64-bit chip running both HP-UX 11.i v2 -- HP's version of Unix -- and Linux.
The port is available for downloading from the MySQL Web site, http://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysql-4.0.html. A Windows XP version that takes advantage of the Itanium 2 is in development -- it's available in the pre-release 4.1 edition, which can also be downloaded from MySQL -- and should ship in final form in the second quarter of this year, said MySQL.
MySQL's announcement comes a day after the release of an Evans Data Corporation study that noted MySQL database usage had grown 30 percent last year.
